Let’s face it. Going into a classroom of students can be intimidating even for those of us who consider ourselves to be ‘good with kids.’ Talking at kids and getting through to kids with a presentation that is engaging and relevant are two very different outcomes. Hopefully we are all striving for the latter! In our ongoing discussion about outreach strategies and tactics, we continue to look for the sweet spot where what we say, how we say it, and what we do all come together and create an opportunity for real excitement in the classroom or at the exhibit table.
Got 10 minutes? If you do, I guarantee you can boost your outreach game and come away better prepared for your next interaction with students. Ten minutes is all you will need to absorb the lessons of three short online tutorials ASCE has put together with the help of our friends at WGBH, the producers of Design Squad Nation! You’ll barely break a sweat as you learn about preparing to do a civil engineering activity with kids, think through sound messaging strategies that help kids learn what civil engineering is all about, and discover classroom techniques that will help even the most timid of us gain the upper hand as we work with kids to share our passion for the profession!
So, go ahead! No special athletic equipment required here. Just 10 minutes of your time and the desire to be a better informed outreach volunteer!
