Welcome and thanks for reading my blog. I’m looking forward to sharing my thoughts with you as I jump into my year as ASCE president and tackling the objectives I’ve set for me and the Society. And I hope to hear from you with your reactions, ideas, and suggestions.
If you were in Charlotte at the annual conference or read the story in ASCE News, you know from my inaugural address that I have one overarching goal: to ensure the future leadership of ASCE. We have 11 years to achieve the aspirations we laid out for ourselves in The Vision for Civil Engineering in 2025. It’s time we picked up the pace of progress, and it will accelerate during my year.
For decades, ASCE has been a great asset to me and for my career, as it has been to my colleagues and friends, many of whom are peers not only professionally, but like it or not, in age too. It’s time that our generation “pays it forward” to the next, to ensure the vitality of our profession and of ASCE.
It’s only natural that we’re most comfortable building relationships with those in our own age group or comparable experience. But it’s easy to find many great up-and-coming engineering leaders among the millennials or those on the younger side of Generation X, likely within your own practice and community, and active in our Sections, Branches, Younger Member Groups and Student Chapters. I encourage you to get to know them better. They will appreciate what you have to share, and we will all benefit.
I encourage you to take advantage of this blog format to have a direct dialogue with me about our Society and its future, what you’d like to see from ASCE and where you’d like to see it go. I want to hear from all generations of our membership. Please share your views with me below.
